For graduate chapters within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, one of the highest honors a member can receive is the title of Member of the Year. This member, chosen by other members of her chapter, exemplifies what it means to be of service to all mankind and sisterly to all chapter members.

Member of the Year
Michelle Lloyd-Peay

Gamma Nu Omega Chapter’s Member of the Year for 2025 is Michelle Lloyd Peay!
Michelle was initiated into Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 2006. Actively involved, she has served as graduate advisor for Psi Chapter (4 years) and Mu Chapter (2 years), treasurer, assistant treasurer, vice-president and community service chairman for the Pink and Green Community Service Foundation, Inc. She has served on several committees including membership, standards, and leadership development. She is a member of Junior League an organization that provides a diverse setting for community service opportunities with a specific focus on advancing women's leadership. She is also a member of Top Ladies of Distinction which provides consistent services focus, particularly supporting teens consistently from graded 7-12.
An avid sports fan, Michelle enjoys attending sporting events, tailgating, and cheering on the Gamecocks. She enjoys events which require movement such as ax-throwing and exercise. When asked what motto/scripture she lives by she states Stephen Covey asserts- "Accountability breeds responsibility." She hold herself and others accountable. She says she is a firm believer in John Maxwell's assertion of the 360 degree leader. Michelle says she can develop her influence from anywhere in an organization. She believes that titles and positions do no matter as much as action.
Michelle says her best committee experiences have been with leadership development, either serving our community or conducting workshops. She is most comfortable engaging others with a purpose. She enjoys developing a plan, executing it, and being a part of it coming to fruition. Helping others discover the leader within gives her great satisfaction. She states her best leadership experiences were during her years as graduate advisor. Being graduate advisor probably has been her most challenging role because young adults are developing into who they are while trying to learn about Sorority in the brief time they are undergraduates. They are adults but require so much guidance while demanding autonomy. Creatively balancing the needs of the undergraduates to meet the goals of the Sorority while allowing them to take charge appropriately is rewarding because she knows that she had a consistent role in perpetuating the sorority through its lifeline-undergraduates.
Michelle states she is a planner that pursues her interests. Each of the interests serve to develop her in some way. Her plans include serving as assistant secretary for the chapter in 2026-27. Upon completion of that goal, she would like to serve on nomination (2028) and strengthen the collaboration between leadership development and succession planning for the chapter. She desires to be a part of developing a leadership academy for the chapter. Finally, she states that she would like to be the secretary of the chapter (2029-2030), become a Silver Star and Life member then relax feeling accomplished by supporting the leadership the best that she can.
